Despite the adversities they have faced, these incredible young people, have discovered a sense of self-belief, connectedness, and achievement through their music – challenging stereotypes about young people, delving into the realities of life, the limited opportunities available to them, and the injustices and hardships they’ve encountered. Watching the process of how they have created the album and sharing their perspectives and life experiences through recordings has been an incredible experience which will be a long-lasting memory, for them and something that will inspire other young people within the city.

Statistics show that women, girls & non-binary people are hugely underrepresented in the music industry.
At The Music Works we want to address this inequality and provide real opportunities for all young people to make the music they want to make.
Can you help? We are looking for women, girls & non-binary people aged between 8-30 and living in Gloucestershire to fill out our survey this March.
This is an opportunity to tell us about your music tastes, interests and plans so that we can help build the right programmes for you.

In February 2023, the Knife Angel, made from 100,000 seized blades, visited Gloucester Cathedral. The Music Works collaborated with 6 young individuals to create ‘Lights Out,’ an immersive installation addressing knife crime. These individuals formed the group: GCODA and have been working together over the past year to produce an entire album which they released on 23rd February 2024 called ‘Lights Out’.
Lights Out is not just an album but a powerful testament to resilience, friendship and breaking stereotypes.
