South African born, London based poet Thembe has been writing poetry since the age of twelve.
Through the years of studying Comparative Literature and Cultural Studies and having an active involvement in poetry communities such as Canterbury Wise Words Festival, Apples and Snakes Writing Room and The Roundhouse Poetry Collective, Thembe has developed into the dynamic spoken word performer she is today.
Having a singing background, music was always apparent in Thembe’s childhood. When a poetry collection by one of her favourite artists, Tupac Shakur, was gifted to her by a friend in early secondary school, her perspective on poetry, and subsequent relationship to it, all began to change. It transformed what was once abstract, rigid and outdated into an exciting, stimulating and raw outlet for her to process the world and express her own voice.
Having already performed at TEDx Talk University of Kent, Canterbury Wise Words Festival, City Sound Project, SoFar Sounds London, The London Improv Theatre, Thembe also was the featured headliner at Jawdance and The Roundhouse ‘The Last Word Festival’ as a finalist in the 2017 Slam Poetry competition, and an artist in residence at SPINE Festival. Thembe’s highly anticipated book ‘We That Wither Beneath’ will be launched March 21st 2019 at the Strike A Light Festival, Gloucester.
